Sal's Bit Of Italy

This family owned-and-operated eatery is a tiny place where the authentic cuisine (ancestral recipes direct from Southern Italy) contradict the decor (plastic grapes, hanging empty wine bottles and autographed photos of Mohammed Ali). During the day, the window-walled, dim main room bustles with the constant action of customers picking up takeout orders. At night, the place is somewhat of a gathering point for local families, young couples and the occasional group traveling over 20 miles for their stuffed crust pizza. Big on Catering for schools, sports teams and businesses, Sal's is well known for his STUFFED Pizza, a huge thick well filled pie that is really a dinner unto it self but goes well with salad, garlic bread and a good wine from Sal's wine cellar! Sal's focuses on an extensive number of unique pasta dishes, baked casseroles and simple dinner entrees prepared with basic ingredients. They excel at the four basic sauces (marinara, Bolognese, pesto and arrabiata) and each is offered with a choice of seven pastas. Their specialty dishes range from the rich penne matriciana, with tomatoes and Italian bacon tossed into a tart onion sauce, to the more elaborate seafood variety of mussels, calamari and shrimp frutti de mari with tender linguine. The entree selection doesn't end there, though. Along with the catch of the day, there is the standard chicken parmigiana, as well as a veal scaloppini prepared in whatever way the chef feels like making it that day.
