Another new restaurant, another visit to a place with a past. In this case we call on Izakaya Zero by chef Takashi Abe in downtown Huntington Beach. It's a self-described Japanese tavern in the space most recently occupied by Tim and Liza Goodell's Red Pearl Kitchen. Before that it was the original home of Brewbaker's, the bread bakery and make-your-own-beer store. (Full review)
Things like tempura-battered popcorn shrimp ($6.80) and a Mexican-influenced lobster gratin ($12.80) aren’t what I expected from O.C. sushi master Takashi Abe, but that’s what’s on the menu at his newest eatery, Izakaya Zero. The restaurant opened in the Huntington Beach space that was vacated by the Goodell’s Red Pearl Kitchen, and while you can order sashimi and rolls, Izakaya Zero’s main focus is Japanese pub or tavern-style food with other cultural influences. The menu consists of comfort dishes and traditional Japanese offerings. (Full review)
