Offstage, Reeve Carney - frontman for the Los Angeles rock band that bears his last name - is a sincere, courteous, and disarmingly modest young man who will charm your socks off with funny stories about how he discovered "Bohemian Rhapsody" at age 9 while watching Wayne's World. But put him onstage in front of a live audience, and this polite, well-mannered young man is transformed into a strutting rock-star peacock, wowing the crowd with his intensity, passion, and sheer talent.
As one journalist writing in the L.A. Weekly put it after attending one of his live shows: "As I get my first glimpse of Reeve Carney, I already feel my $5 cover has been well-spent. Allow me to elaborate: I would have paid $5 to watch Reeve Carney open a can of soup."
And she's just talking about one member of Carney. Watch Reeve onstage with his virtuosic guitar-playing brother Zane and comparisons to some of rock's greatest duos don't seem all that far-fetched. Indeed the legendary partnerships between Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry served as inspiration to the Carney brothers. Give one listen to bassist Aiden Moore whose melodic approach lifts each song in a way that is as natural as it is effortless, and drummer Jon Epcar whose energy and stage presence are somehow equaled by his versatility and range, and you'll discover that Carney is one of the most powerful, captivating and adept bands of their generation.
The band possesses an undeniable chemistry on and off the stage and continually draws comparisons to almost every great band of the past half-century; Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley are constantly references points for their fans with the boys sneaking in covers of "She's So Heavy" and "Nude" like they wrote the songs themselves. But, anyone who sees this band live knows that they are more than just an amalgamation of influential bands that have come before them - they bear an intrigue, a ferocity, a charm that is distinctly their own. Perhaps this is why in a matter of months their weekly residency at Molly Malone's turned into a circus where crowds of people were constantly left outside, at times sparking some to climb on to the roof so they could listen through the air conditioning vents. It was probably this same charisma that led the band to the world famous Troubadour where they started an equally successful weekly residency that hit its first sellout after only 5 performances.
Capturing this energy and quality on record has been Carney's number one goal the past year and with the band's first single release, "Love Me Chase Me" they show that they have arrived ahead of schedule. The song itself straddles nostalgia and imagination with a fire and freshness that seems eerily innate to these 4 young men. For the record Carney collaborated with relatively unknown and reclusive producer Rutherford Longfellow. The single also comes with a teaser track from their debut album "Mr. Green", scheduled for release this fall and invites the listener into a world where familiarity and fantasy have found their common ground.
Carney has toured extensively over the past 2 years opening for the likes of The Black Crowes, Fergie, Live and The Veronicas. In between tours they have found a way to perform at some of the most prestigious festivals in the world receiving rave reviews at Outside Lands, Beale St., Bonnaroo and The Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia.
And they show no sign of stopping in 2009 as they are slotted to perform at Lollapalooza, 10'000 Lakes, and Dfest and set to open for the Veronicas on their nationwide summer tour to Gov't Mule in September. For the boys of Carney, the future is certainly bright and they seem poised and determined to fulfill their potential.
