It may be a jumping nightclub, but the new Code restaurant-lounge in Newport Beach can be a pretty boring place to eat.

The "949" area code isn't the only status symbol in town anymore.

People who keep track of who's who and what's what know that it's not necessarily a person's area code that distinguishes them, but rather a Code card.

Lunch at Code

There is a new chef in town and a new attitude taking over at Code Restaurant in Newport Beach. I can't speak for the night activity but lunch was a great.

Upon reading a critics review in the OC Register last week, I couldn't decide if it was good or bad. So, I decided to check it out for myself. Took a friend and her son today and went for lunch. Our server was very friendly and seemed, for the most part, to be able to answer our numerous questions about the menu. I purposely asked a lot of questions to see if she knew the food and menu. The questions that she was unable to answer, she willingly checked with the kitchen to get me the answers I was looking for.

We decided to try several different items, even though we knew it was more food than we could eat. We started with the sweet potato french fries that came with this absolutely amazing marshmallow dipping sauce. Expecting the sauce to be white, we were surprised when it arrived looking more like caramel. It was fantastic! I thought it would be really good over ice cream or apple pie as well. We also ordered the Kung Pao Calamari and a plate that had melon, proscuitto and Burrata cheese (a real nice creamy kind of cheese) drizzled with lavender honey. The Calamari was not spicy, unless you ate one of the chiles, but was definitely one of the best I've ever had. The melon plate was fantastic. It's really good if you take a little of each of the items on the plate and put it on the little toasted breads that comes on it. All the flavors complimented each other rather nicely.

For our main course, my friend's son ordered the Buffalo Burger. My intentions were to have a bite to try it but he dug in too fast and I missed out. He did say it was very good. My friend and I decided to share a mixed green salad that had strawberries, jicama, walnuts and a vanilla rum vineagrette. I don't care for walnuts and asked if they had any other nut to change with. I was pleasantly surprised to have candied pecans as a substitute. I wasn't completely sure about the dressing. I think my mind was set for sweet and it was more tart, but the salad was good, just the same. Our favorite item was the pizza we ordered - chicken and peach with marscapone cheese, a touch of wildflower honey, and just the exact right amount of red chili flakes to perk up the taste buds. I was nervous about this item but it turned out to be the best thing ever! The server said that it is one of the most popular items and only occasionally do the peaches release a little too much juice and it gets a little mushy. My friend dipped a piece of the pizza into the marshmallow dipping sauce and said "YUM!" - so there ya go! Goodness all around.

By this time we were ready to burst but I really wanted to take a look at the dessert menu. They had a Chocolate Creme Brulee that was enticing but our server said they were out. I was bummed because I adore Creme Brulee. She went to the kitchen to check and see if they had anything else like it and came back to tell me she was mistaken and they had it! However, it was actually a Coffee and Chocolate Creme Brulee - even better yet! I ordered one for the 3 of us to share and OMG! If I go into how good it was, this review will become x-rated!!!

So, feeling like we were all going to fall over and roll out of the restaurant, I anticipated the amount of the bill. How surprised I was when it was only $57 for all that! WOW!

Overall, this experience was fantastic and I can't wait to do it again and try a bunch of new things - although since I know how good these items were, I might need to take more people so we can order these again as well as some others.

Worst Bar In Town

This place is terrible. I went recently with a large group of people for a birthday party 15-20 people. We showed up at about 10 to see a rather large line, as we piled out of the 4 taxi’s we were all wordering if getting in was an option. We waited in the line while the dumbass bouncers paid no attention to anybody except their persian friends or the VIP’s. We waited and waited, by the time we made it to the front of the line, we realized it was not beacuse they were letting the common folk in it was by defult beacuse every person in front of us had just left. Now that we were at the front we had a shimmer of hope that this party might just happen. After waiting for over an hour and watching lots fo persians roll in the dumbass bouncer tells us that it is “reservation only tonight”. That would of been very useful information when we first got into the line, Fury did much the same thing with their line taticts. Get the line long so they look busy but when you get in there is just a handful of people staring at each other. Code will not last. That is the first and last time I will ever return to that bar, right now I am systematically plotting my revenge.
Good Luck Code

Worst Night I have had in a LONG time!!!

I came up from San Diego for a friends bday bash and thought it would be a good idea to check out a new hotspot - Code in Newport beach. We arrived around 10:15 - 5 girls and 4 guys. Talked to the bouncer at front and he asked us if we had bottle service or reservations. We told him we were on a list - but didn't have bottle service. He directed us to the front of a line near the door where we proceeded to wait for another 45 minutes. Our friends were inside already and said it was empty. We asked the bouncer how much longer it was going to be and he told us we might not get in at all if we didn't have bottle service. Meanwhile, we sat there and watched small groups of well connected douchebags just hug the bouncer and walk in. We left after telling the bouncer exactly what we thought about his management of the line and his club and went on with our night. I can't believe I drove up all the way from San Diego and was treated this way - NEVER AGAIN! DON'T BOTHER! The next day I talked to my friends who made it inside and they said that it wasn't that good anyway.

There is better out thee

I ate there several weeks ago, and the place was dead! Not really a dinner spot. As for the food the menu was short and the prices were on the high side for what they offered (comparing to other quality restaurants in town).

The dishes were small and the food was bland. We had the sea bass and filet mignon

If you are looking for a nice place to eat I would continue to search.
